To go on a retreat usually conjures up images of remote, sometimes exotic, locations… Hawaii, Bali or the Greek Isles. They can be just for a weekend or an entire month or more.

When we can’t afford the time away, or the moolah to go on an organised retreat, we can still derive some of the benefit by finding ways in our everyday lives to retreat and renew.

Here are just a few of my favourite ideas:

  1. Spend a day in the garden. Or the container pots. Or a community garden. Anything to get your hands in the earth and dirt under your finger nails.green smoothie
  2. Fast for a day or three. Fasting reminds us of the bounty of food available to us. It also lets the body rest from the busy-ness of digesting. I did this one last month – 2 days water only + 1 day green smoothies. I felt sparklingly new inside and out!
  3. Abstain from speaking. Silence leads to inwardness, even in the midst of family and work life. When I refrain, I really understand how much energy goes into all those communications!
  1. Do a media fast for a week. Turn off all input—TV, radio, stereo, newspaper, Internet, videos, books—and see what insights you “tune” in to. I recommend doing a media fast whenever you do a food fast! A favourite combo of mine!
  2. Go for a hike. Even an hour of one-on-one time with Mother Nature can reap huge relaxation dividends.
  3. Lie in bed reading—all day! Can you say, “ultra-nourishing”?
  1. Take a long, hot bath. Candlelight, bath salts (wine optional).
  2. Get a massage in your home. If you live in the city, these are very do-able these days. Follow that with down-time (and a bit of reading or a bath) and the R&R is complete.
  1. Take more naps. These are especially delicious when strategically placed in the middle of a hectic day.
  2. Spend a day doing what you love, not what you must. Paint, poke around the builder’s salvage yard, take a book to the park, try out a new delicious-sounding recipe that you’ve never made before but have always wanted to try—anything but what’s on your to-do list. You’ll feel recharged and ready after that to dive back into the to-do list.
